Goal Setting: Turning Dreams Into Achievable Realities
Setting goals is how we turn dreams into reality. By making them SMART and relevant to our lives, we lay the groundwork for success. Breaking goals into small steps, setting deadlines, and staying flexible are key. Let's explore how we can achieve our dreams one step at a time.
Define Your Goals Clearly: The classic approach is to make your goals specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). In the age of social media, we need to put special emphasis on relevant— make your goal meaningful to you, your circumstances, and your values. Finding personal meaning in your goals will carry you through the ups and downs of achieving your goal. Working with a good therapist helps you sort out truly relevant and empowering pursuits versus those that stem from shame and insecurity.
Break It Down: Large goals can be so overwhelming that we give up before we’ve even started. Break goals down into smaller, actionable steps. This not only makes them more manageable but also allows you to track your progress more effectively. “I’m going to clean the house up this weekend” vs. “Today, I’m going to wipe down the bathroom counter and mirror.”
Set Deadlines: Assign deadlines to each of your smaller goals. Having a timeframe can create a sense of urgency and help keep you focused and motivated.
Stay Flexible, Present, & Mindful: Life is unpredictable, and obstacles will arise along the way. Be prepared to adapt your plans as needed. Pay attention to saying, “I’ll be happy/content when...” You’re alive right now! You’re acting on your goals right now! We can pause to appreciate that in this moment, even if goals aren’t materializing as expected. To do otherwise is to risk living in constant disappointment-- the finish line for “I’ll be happy when...” constantly resets just below your awareness.
Find Support: Share your goals with friends, family, or a therapist who can provide encouragement and hold you accountable. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network can help keep you motivated during challenging times.
Visualize Success: Take time to visualize yourself achieving your goals. Make a physical or digital collage with images that remind you of your goals and their successful completion. Put it where you will always see it (near your bed, or bathroom mirror). This step is especially important for ADHDers, who may benefit from external reminders of longer-term tasks and aspirations.
Take Action Consistently: Consistent action is key to making progress towards your goals. You and your therapist can develop an action plan that fits you and your unique circumstances and needs.
Goal setting is the key to making dreams come true. By breaking goals into steps, staying flexible, and seeking support, we pave the way for success. With consistency and determination, we can turn our dreams into reality.
